Exercise: Hide and Break
Commitment, exploring the space, and making each other giggle
I’m all about new warm ups lately. For this one, we’re playing a mash up of Hide and Seek and Break Ball.
Exercise: Hide and Break
One person leave the room. They loudly count to 20. If they can’t leave the room or can’t count loudly from outside the room, have that person cover their eyes and count loudly from inside the room. While that’s happening, everyone else on the team will hide.
Now, maybe you’re in a theatre and there are actual places to hide. Likely, you’re in a rehearsal studio with between two and zero good hiding spots. Still do your absolute best to hide. Even if there’s truly no good place to hide, find the best available option and commit to hiding there. When the seeker returns, hold perfectly still, not wanting to be seen. Commit 100% to hiding.
When the seeker finds someone, they walk up to that person, put their face right up to their face and say “I see you.” No one should laugh. The first person to break (laugh, corpse etc) loses and becomes the seeker. They go outside to count while the group finds new hiding spaces.
This game is an opportunity to get creative with the space, mess with each other, and have fun. So often we explore the stage, but not any other part of the theatre. This should be a good one for thinking about the entire room as a playing space.
